CREATIVITY is the soul trying to make its presence felt through the human personality it is encased in. Through the humdrum of daily existence come these whispers from the Eternal Source within us asking us to pay attention, to LIVE and not merely exist. It is the “inner child” seeking permission to emerge out of the dark wilderness of our subconscious, with its gifts of innocence and insight.
We are born with many soul yearnings. We come as messengers from other realms filled with the wonder and joy of living, until we are seduced by the worldliness of the world and we lose our innocence. As Wordsworth wrote in his Ode: Intimations of Immortality —
Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting:
The Soul that rises with us, our life’s Star,
Hath had elsewhere its setting,
And cometh from afar:
. . . . trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home:
Heaven lies about us in our infancy!
Shades of the prison-house begin to close
Upon the growing Boy . . . .
As we grow, the world and its preoccupations, the need to survive and compete, to excel and succeed becomes paramount. We forget the very purpose for which we were sent down into this earthly existence: to realise our ancestry, link and identity with Divinity. But all is not lost ever !
We have all felt at times, amidst nature or in moments of joy, while in love or engrossed in some rare music, poetry or art, the whisper of something, ‘out of this world’ !
Creativity is the soul’s message beckoning us back to the true purpose of life. Innocence can be retrieved and poured into life, with the added benefit of experience. Life is finally about LOVE.
Creativity is a journey of LOVE. How? There is so much in this world and in our lives that is NOT love. Perhaps then, creativity is a story of uncovering the ‘not-love’ in us and around us, peeling away these dense layers and finally discover our true identity. We are Beings of Light, enveloped often by darkness. Maybe life is the journey to discovering this Light within and sharing it with the world. Creative endeavours whether writing, painting, music or anything else help us to come out of our selves, the usual selves that we are saddled with, mired with the weight of mundane living.
I want to share with you here, some parts of my own journey, some lessons learnt, some insights gained, not just in moments of joy but through the anvil of sorrow and pain too.
